Well, we've had our last night for the term, a dress up theme with Zombies (Andy), Disco witches (Jasper) and Cat Women (Lucy), MIB (Oliver), Rasta folk (Kim) and Pirates (Akela), Ducks (Elena), Rock Stars (Heath & Baloo), Wizards (Samuel), Dancers (Tulsi and Gary-Paul), and three even came dressed up as very authentic Cub Scouts - what great costumes!
So now it is only a few short days till CubBOOM, our regional camp at Glenreagh. On Thursday, the trailer will be packed full of tents, kitchen gear and food, and Pod and Martyn will go early Friday to do all the setting up. Then the parents and Cubs will meet Kim and Baloo at the Scout Hall and try to be ready to leave by 5.30 so that we can arrive at camp before we are all too tired - it is a 2 1/2 hour drive, via Casino and Grafton. We will need to eat dinner on the way and traditionally we have stopped at McDonald's in Grafton, but when one well informed young man voiced his aversion to dining in fast-food restaurants that have a chequered social and environmental history, I and many others whole-heartedly agreed. Trouble is, where shall we stop now? Shall we all just bring dinner with us? What about those drivers looking for a hot drink? Can anyone recommend somewhere else in Grafton that boasts a higher social and environmental consciousness, open at ~7.30pm on a Friday night? I would be very happy to go there! Please let me know asap so we can check it out.
Then we will have two days of busy-ness with lots of sunshine, a possible shower or two (I mean rain!), warm days and cool nights, and many hours of kids. Please remind your cub that they need to
1. Drink lots and lots of water
2. Listen well and stay in the group
3. Take good care of their belongings and try to keep their tent tidy.
4. Go to the toilet or shower with a buddy, and bring their buddy back to camp with them
5. Ask a leader if they want to leave camp for any reason
6. Be considerate of other cubs and try to include all in games, conversations and general fun 7. Be considerate of the parents and leaders who are there to help them - to be helpful and do what they are asked to do straight away
8. Listen to their tent sixer and 9. have a great time!
So see you on Friday afternoon. We still need to organise some places in cars for those who wish not to drive, so let me know if you still have a few spare spots. Thanks to everyone! And looking forward to a brilliant camp :)
