Cubs get 'Back to Nature' at Brunswick Heads : Slideshow
One of the highlights of the camp was when we came across a young Echidna strolling through the grass at Torakina. It seemed oblivious to us and actually came right up to us. Have a look at our slideshow below:

Our friend the Echidna! So tell us more about Echidnas...Echidnas are spiny egg-laying mammals of the family Tachyglossidae. There are only 2 living species in this family, in 2 separate genera. The long-nosed echidna is found in New Guinea and the short-nosed in Australia. Echidnas don't have teeth, they have 6 inch long sticky tongues! They eat ants, termites, and earthworms. The tongue licks up the food and then hard pads on the tongue and on the roof of the mouth grind the food into a paste so the echidna can swallow the food. All echidna are all carnivorous. They tend to eat small invertebrates including ants, termites, grubs and worms.

Lantern Workshop - 4 June 2013 - Cubs decorate lanterns for the parade!
Thanks Chris for the photos of our creative cubs! The theme this year has to do with faces - representing the people. Watch this space for photos of the parade!
Jamboree of the Trail 2013 - Evan's Head - Goanna Headland - Saturday 11/5/13
20 intrepid cubs, scouts, leaders and parents braved threatening weather to walk from Evan's Head to Goanna Headland ("Dirrawong" in Burndalung) this Saturday. Although there was a heavy shower as we assembled at the start of the walk (under a shelter, luckily!) there was no further rain for the rest of the walk. The walk started at about 10am with Lauren leading her group of cubs fro her Grey Wolf exercise, with the rest of up tagging a respectful distance behind! See phots for the rest of the story!
2012 CUBORAMA!!!!!!!
15 Cubs, 2 leaders and four intrepid parent helpers traveled down to Glenreagh (south of Grafton) this last weekend (14-16 September 2012) for a great weekend of fun and learning. We arrived on Friday evening and got to setting up out tents (quickly, as it was getting dark), had some dinner and then went up to see some of the movie, but it was so chilly out that we came back before the end and settled in to bed. It was a cold night!
Next morning, we had a beaut breakfast then put up our camp gate. We thought we did pretty well, with most of the work done by the cubs themselves. Then it was off to the bases. First was the flying-fox! Followed by tunnels, low ropes course, climbing wall and others. A full day! We came back, had showers and dinner, then it was time for campfire - and our performance of "Hi ho Hi ho, It's home from camp we go", and our skit "I wanna do a Weeeeeeee!". Better than it sounds. Then into bed for another chilly night (Glenreagh gets really cold!). Next morning we had four more bases. First it was screen printing, then billy-carts, water cannons and last of all, archery. All heaps of fun and good learning on many levels. We were also able to squeeze in a Pack Council (where the Sixers and Seconders got to talk about what we have been doing for the term and give ideas for next term's program) and also a Cub's Own - which is like a short service for reflection and thanks, planned and led by our Gold Boomerangers. After that, it was time to pack up and head home. A successful and enjoyable weekend for all. Thanks to all the parents, Leaders, Scouts and Venturers who made it all happen!! See the slide show below for more photos. And thanks to Ted for coming along on his first ever Cub Camp. |

Pirates and Princesses
Arrrrrgh! Well, last night was a lot of fun, and what a lot of scurvy dogs there were! The cubs were invited to dress as pirates, or princesses if they didn't want to be a pirate, but (not suprisingly!) they all decided that pirating was the better choice!
So what did we do? Our pirates had to make teams of six and relay up and down the hall, carrying one member between two others in the two-person seat carry. When they reached the end of the hall they had to perform impromptu first aid on their passenger/patient, according to what was called out by the leader - e.g. graze, burn, snake bite or fainting. This was exciting and gave the cubs more first aid practice, in a hurry! After that we practiced our songs and skits for Cuborama - (here we are doing "sitting on an invisible bench") - acting was so much fun - but could they stop? Only after lots of runs through could a game of "Helicopter" entice them away.

Scouts in Action 21- August - International Scouting Night
Last Tuesday, the Lismore Scout Hall...rang to the sounds of Celtic Music as the Leaders. Parents, Cubs and Joeys danced the night away (the Scouts looked on, too cool to dance). They came in the national dress of their choice and we had at least one dressed as Japanese, two Jamaicans and Chinese, three as Scots, Four Italians, Five Hawaiians (though one claimed to be a Swiss tourist IN Hawaii!), amongst many others. The night ended with a supper and prizes and much fun was had by all. Special thanks go to Rick previously of "Feral Folk" for calling the dances. The evening raised a small donation for the Friends of the Koala in Lismore where Rick is a volunteer, and he encouraged us to visit soon. All in all, a great night, thanks to all who helped, cooked, danced or just looked on and watched it all go by!

Cubs Make Lanterns! June 6th 2012With temperatures down to 10 degrees, is was a chilly Tuesday night for Lismore! The cubs decorated their lanterns to reflect this year's Parade theme of ‘Harvest’.
We hope all the cubs can join the parade with their lanterns on the evening of the 23rd of June - make sure you are there to meet up at Riverside Park beforehand. For more information see the website http://www.lanternparade.com As they say, "there will be a smorgasboard of things to see and do at this year's festival, so why not make a week end of it! With everything from live music, concerts, performances, exhibitions, comedy, markets and much, much more. Join us and celebrate our wonderful creative community and this magnificent Northern Rivers". Not to mention fireworks! Always a good night. |

We visit the Lismore Police Station - 14/5/2012This week Senior Constable Kirk gave the Cubs a good introduction to the Lismore Police Station - from the lock up cells, to the rescue vehicles. The cubs found out that it is important to follow the law and how to be good citizens and how the Police can help you.

Lismore Cubs Butterfly Park AdventureLast Tuesday night (13/3/12) the best kept secret in Goonellabah - aka the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly park - was invaded by - aliens? No! Peanut butter sandwiches? No! Cubs Scouts? Yes!
Twenty three of them (including a Joey Scout and a friend) pleasantly surprised dog-walkers and joggers with their good behaviour and happiness as they and their leaders and various parents walked into the park and set about playing games and other adventures. Have a look at our slide show by clicking on the title above to see what they got up to! |
Swimming Night and Collections
Well, the last couple of nights have been very interesting. We had a swimming night at the Lismore Memorial Baths with 20 cubs attending, passing lots of challenges and games. The aim of the night was to prepare the cubs for a canoeing activity later in the term, and all did well, swimming 50m and showing how to wear their PFDs with skill.
Last week Akela was away, and so we had time to bring in our collections! Wow! What great collections they had all made - from stamps to model aeroplanes, to Harry Patter cards and beer bottle tops to beanie kids! It was great to hear all the cubs confidently tell us all about how and when they started their collections. And some haven't even been invested yet! Well done. and of course we did some games - learning all of each others' names can be tricky so we played the blanket game to see who had been trying to. Thanks cubs.

2012 Begins!
First week back we had games and a review of the parade system, good for all and especially the new chums. Second week we had a massive 25 turn up for Bring-A-Friend night - a great night was had by all, with team games so we could get to know each other. Our second night was a "Bring a Friend" night with lots of games and making our own pizzas!
